Took a while to schedule us in Penticton, but on the day staff were great: cheerful, polite and cleaned up after themselves. They did a good job - especially as we requested 187 soffit 'breath' holes capped with alternate air…

What's the Difference Between Soffit and Fascia

Soffit and fascia are often spoken in the same sentence and while they reside close to each other on a home, they are not the same thing.

Soffit: Horizontal panel on the underside of the roof’s overhang (eaves), bridging the gap between the exterior wall and the fascia.

Fascia: Vertical board running along the outer edge of the roof, covering the ends of rafters/trusses and supporting gutters.

Soffit The Under-Eave Protector

Location: The soffit is the horizontal surface beneath the roof’s overhang (eaves), bridging the gap between the exterior wall and the fascia.

Functions:

  • Ventilation: Vented soffits allow airflow into the attic, preventing moisture buildup that can lead to mold, rot, or ice dams. Proper ventilation also regulates attic temperature, reducing energy costs.

  • Protection: Shields rafters and insulation from pests (birds, rodents, insects) and weather elements like rain and wind.

  • Aesthetics: Conceals unfinished rafters, creating a clean, polished look that complements your home’s siding.

Materials:

  • Common options include vinylaluminum, and wood.

  • Vinyl and aluminum are low-maintenance, resistant to rot, and ideal for humid climates like Kelowna’s.

  • Aluminum is the most common type of soffit used while wood soffit is often used in higher end homes to provide a distinct look.

Fascia The Gutter’s Foundation

Location: The fascia is the vertical board running along the roof’s edge, covering the ends of the rafters and supporting the gutter system.

Functions:

  • Gutter Support: Provides a stable anchor for gutters, ensuring proper water drainage away from your foundation.

  • Weatherproofing: Protects the roof’s wooden framework from water infiltration, which can warp or rot the structure.

  • Curb Appeal: Acts as a finishing trim, giving the roofline a sharp, cohesive appearance.

Materials:

  • Durable options like aluminumHardiTrim, or pressure-treated wood are preferred for longevity.
